Cardinal Quartet is formally Ebony Strings Ensemble
Ebony Strings had many members who have since moved on to pursue other musical endeavors. Their sound and strength as a group has significantly matured and they have decided to condense into a formal string quartet; this name change is significant of their growth. Not only is “cardinal” the state bird of the quartet's home state of Ohio, but it also is defined as “essential, fundamental, or prime.” Each member has grown in their individual musical abilities and the quartet is working towards creating a sound that is significant and representative of reaching their prime as a single, unique, harmonious sound.
Cardinal Quartet is comprised of classically trained high school and college musicians. Originally Ebony Strings, the quartet was founded in 2003 when its current members were between the ages of 10 and 14. They received their training through private lessons, various school programs, Cincinnati Jr. Strings, Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Nouveau Chamber Players, and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Although many of the members are planning a career in music, their interests vary from psychology, music composition to organizational leadership. Their individual musical endeavors have taken them across the globe including The White House, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Disneyworld, Australia, and Poland. Locally, they have had the honor to play as pre-concert entertainment for the Cincinnati Opera, the opening of the National Underground Freedom Center, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Donors Dinner, Cincinnati Zoofari, Urban League, and numerous weddings, church, benefits and corporate events.
